ReNew album was recorded and released earlier this year and features all original compositions by Shunzo Ohno and one original song by Buster Williams. The album features several Grammy Award winning artists and two songs that won awards from the International Songwriting Competition. “Lea’s Run”,  features spoken word artist “G. Yamazawa” who is a National Poetry Slam Champion, two-time Individual World Poetry Slam Finalist, and 3-time Southern Fried Champion. Since the album was inspired by the recovery efforts in Japan from the 2011 earthquake and tsunami,  a large percentage of profits are donated to the survivors who are still heavily impacted by the natural disaster. The album was released along with the short documentary “Never Defeated” which outlines Shunzo Ohno’s personal battle with cancer, lip and face damage from a car accident, and other seemingly insurmountable obstacles. This story that he shared with Brewster  High School students was played on Japan TV and was officially released at Symphony Space earlier this year.

Alone, Not Alone, penned in the immediate wake of the above-mentioned tsunami, begins with the solitary trumpet before massaging the band into a relaxed muscle of evocation. This is Ohno at his purest, playing with an intimacy surpassed only by the reprise of the title cut which closes out the album alongside daughter Sasha on cello.” – AllAboutJazz.com Tyran Grillo

“The music of this piece, as well as the monumental ‘Musashi’ have been written to glorify Japanese character, which shapes the works’ haunting and savoury content with glistening virtuosity. Bassist and musical soul mate Buster Williams, drummer Billy Drummond and percussionists Cyro Baptista, guitarist Paul Bollenback as well as spoken word artist George Yamazawa and cellist Sasha Ono also make charismatic contributions on this memorable recording.” – Raul DaGama
