Virtual Tours of the Anne Frank Annex

8th grade English students have been recently studying The Diary of Anne Frank and her challenges during the Holocaust.  Anne Frank chronicled her challenges in her secret annex in German occupied Netherlands. While studying this unit, students visited the Secret Annex Online.  The site provides an engaging virtual simulation and 3D model of the annex.  Students can better understand the conditions and situation that the family experienced during their time in hiding.

To demonstrate their understanding, groups of students in Mrs. Romaine’s classes collaborated on scripting and then recording tours of the virtual annex.  Students used a screencasting application with an embedded webcam to record their virtual tours. This activity not only provided students the opportunity to experience the annex, but they better internalized the experience through the creation of their tours.  Below are a few examples of the works created by the students.
