General Technology Skills for all K-12 Teachers

Level I

  • Understand how to start up and shut down a computer system (Windows) and peripherals
  • Understand how to open, close, minimize, and maximize windows
  • Start an application (using an icon, toolbar, taskbar, or from the program menu)
  • Name, save, retrieve, revise a file
  • Understand printing options (local vs. network)
  • Insert and eject floppy disk and CD-ROM
  • Copy document from hard disk to floppy disk and vice versa
  • Understand how to login to a network and change password
  • Understand how to login to EClass (Win School) and take attendance

Level II

  • Create and name/rename subdirectories/folders
  • Understand the physical connections of the networked computer
  • Use the cut, copy, and paste functions between Windows applications
  • Use right click mouse options
  • Open and work with more than one application at a time
  • Understand how to manage files inside subdirectories/folders (save, open, copy) using Windows Explorer

Level I

Level I

  • Navigate web sites using forward, back, and hyperlinks
  • Understand how to use a search engine and online reference too
  • Understand copyright laws
  • Understand how to save web sites in the "favorites" folder
  • Understand how to access email accounts using Microsoft Outlook and web access
  • Understand how to save and print search results

Level II

  • Know how to evaluate websites for appropriate instructional use
  • Create search queries with Boolean operators (And, Or, Not)
  • Understand how to manage "favorites" folders
  • Send attachments in email messages
  • Understand how to add Internet sources (URL's) to Word documents
  • Understanding of the district filter system and the limits it places on Internet access
  • Understand how to use Electric Library on-line resource
  • Understand the basics of the Big6 information research skills model

Level III

  • Understand the differences among search engines
  • Understand how to manage multiple folders in email application
  • Understand how to perform more complex searches using multiple Boolean operators and multiple sources
  • Use additional on-line reference sites, and know the differences among them
  • Understand how to use the Big6 information research model with students to access and evaluate information


Graphics/Presentation/Multimedia Skills

Level I

  • Basic understanding of Power Point, its advantages and limitations
  • Create, edit and exhibit a multi-slide presentation
  • Understand to how connect a projector to a computer
  • Understand how to import a graphic in a document
  • Use a digital camera
  • Insert clip art or picture files
  • Create and format a table
  • Understand what a scanner is and how it works

Level II

  • Use graphics in PowerPoint presentation
  • Understand how to use animation in PowerPoint
  • Understand how to use a scanner and use scanned contents
  • Understand how to use save and import digital camera images

Level III

  • Format and change digital images
  • Use sound and multimedia in presentation
  • Modify graphics. (Resize, move, reshape, recolor, rotate, fill, flip, group, smooth, etc.)
