Language Arts:
The language arts program in 4th grade has expanded to cover more exciting areas than ever before! In writing, the units covered include: personal narratives, personal essays, informational essays, short realistic fiction, poetry, independent writing projects, and author celebrations.
Students will also be actively reading and discussing books/novels that cover all genres including fiction, non-fiction, poetry, and fantasy.Science:
Our 4th grade science program consists of numerous hands-on experiments as well as the integration of language arts and technology. The units covered include: buoyancy, weather, plant and animal life cycle, rocks and minerals, and light and simple machines.
Social Studies:
The 4th grade social studies curriculum is one of our most exciting in C.V. Starr! Students will participate in live event learning experiences such as a revolutionary encampment and colonial fair. Others units covered include: Native Americans, explorers, immigration, and local government. Students will use a variety of authentic resources in their study of these units.
Mathematics:
We continue to use the Everyday Mathematics program here at C.V. Starr. Units of study include geometry, multiplication, division, addition, subtraction, estimating, fractions, and percents. Students will learn using a variety of manipulatives and games custom tailored for each lesson.

The 5th grade science units include: Inquiry/scientific method, matter, The Jason Project (new topic annually), oceanography, energy and electricity. Students use a variety of technological tools in their study of these units.
Social Studies:
In Social Studies students will study the following units: Government, geography, history, and economics of U.S., Canada, and Latin America. Streaming videos, internet sites, presentations, political cartoons, CRQ's, DBQ's are all part of the 5th social studies curriculum.
