The enrichment program in the school is based upon the Schoolwide Enrichment Model that was developed by Dr. Joseph Renzulli at the University of Connecticut. It is designed to offer all students opportunities to explore areas of their own special interests while also addressing the needs of identified students who show above average ability, task commitment, and creativity.

ENRICHMENT  S. Beall
The entire school population is serviced through various programs designed to generate student interest and motivation while supporting the general school curriculum. This is done through trips, outside speakers, assembly programs, workshops, cluster groups, projects, movies, etc. All students are eligible to take part in these programs and are selected based upon topic interest, teacher recommendation, and parent nominations. Each enrichment activity and the amount of students that can be involved determines this criteria.

The enrichment class for identified students is a pullout program designed to develop critical thinking, originality, and problem solving skills. Students are identified for this class based upon standardized test scores, teacher recommendations, and alternative methods of nomination such as parent referral. The class meets once a week for 60 minutes. It provides a variety of activities and experiences (mind-benders, group projects, individual study, discussions, games, etc.) that are both enjoyable and challenging. The fifth grade students are introduced to the Autonomous Leaner Diploma Program they will follow through grade 8. The class is ungraded with no required homework.

If you have any questions, you are invited to call Mr. Beall at C.V. Starr.

 CREATIVE ARTS Q. Colman

The C. V. Starr Creative Arts program is based on the district enrichment program standards, which are achievement, or in this case artistic talent, task commitment, and creativity. The main focus of this program will be to provide students the opportunity to pursue their interest in art. To be eligible, a student must have demonstrated an outstanding ability in some of the many fields in art. Students are considered for the program after a required portfolio of artwork is reviewed by the instructor.

The Creative Arts class meets once a week before school. In the program, students explore numerous art media including paint, oil pastel, clay and watercolor. In addition to hands on art activities, students will be researching many artists and career opportunities in art. Students in both the 4th and 5th grade Creative Arts classes are required to keep a current sketch book, to be used for assignments both in class and outside of school.
