Our
day at C.V. Starr begins at 9:00 a.m. and ends at 3:30 p.m. Our current enrollment
is 289 students in grade four and 247 students in grade 5. Our teachers at C.V.
Starr work as teams which allows them to share the responsibility for teaching
the various subjects. The small size of our two person teaching teams, allows
many of the benefits primary teachers experience in a traditional elementary
model, while at the same time provides some of the specialization of a secondary
model. A childs homeroom teacher or parent can quickly assess the performance
of a student/child by speaking with, at most, one or two other teachers on the
team. The most common teaching approach at C.V. Starr requires one teacher to
provide instruction in Language Arts for a 90-minute block of time while their
partner teaches Science and Math to their class for 45 minutes each. Later in
the day the two classes switch, and the process repeats itself. Social Studies
is then taught by both staff members to their homeroom classes. All of the various
instructional models that have been developed have proven very successful over
the past few years.
C.V.
Starr also offers Instrumental Music lessons, before and after school Enrichment
workshops, a before-school Chorus program, Intramurals, and an entire spectrum
of support services ranging from counseling to direct special education teacher
support within a classroom.
The Intermediate School is completely networked with
a T1 line and Internet and E-mail access. We currently have over 100 computers
in the building and every classroom has at least three computers available to
students. We also have seven state of the art wireless portable computer lab.
Teachers in any class can use these notebook computers which can access the
internet. Recently, the Brewster Central School District has purchased video
conferencing equipment which will allow our students, for the first time, to
take virtual tours around the world!
The
Library Media Center is also equipped with 9 computers as well as over 7,000
books.
