Dedication of C.V. Starr Intermediate School

A ceremony was held on April 20, 1998 to officially dedicate the C.V. Starr Intermediate School in honor of Cornelius Vander Starr.  The name for the school was suggested by 4th grader, Kevin Wolff, in a “Name the School” Contest . Throughout his active life, Mr. Starr enjoyed helping young people obtain an education and thus better use their natural capabilities.  Since 1971 the Starr Foundation has awarded $1.7 million dollars in scholarships to over 600 Brewster students to help them attend colleges and universities.  Distinguished guests included Mr. Ta Chun Hsu, President of the Starr Foundation, Mrs. Ans De-Beus and Mr. Michael Maffei, New York State Senator Vincent Leibell III and Assemblyman Willis Stephens.  During the ceremony, Mr. Leibell announced that $15,000 would be given to C.V. Starr for the purchase of library books. Dr. Gary Loewenberg, Interim Superintendent, past and present members of the Board of Education, school administrators, PTA representatives, parents and students all enjoyed the ceremonies which included the unveiling of the plaque in honor of Mr. Starr, a tree planting ceremony, and the burial of a time capsule which will be opened in the year 2023.
