Curriculum
The BCSD curriculum is based on the New York State Next Generation Learning Standards and aligns with the district’s mission, vision, and Profile of a Graduate skills. Our curriculum is more than just a pacing guide or textbook; it represents our collective best thinking on what is most important for students to learn and how to help them achieve it. We continually reflect on and revise our curriculum through collaboration and the use of student data to ensure all of our students experience rigorous, engaging, and meaningful instruction.

Instruction
Our instruction is guided by our written curriculum and our students’ needs. We use evidence-based instructional practices to create supportive learning environments where students can meet their full potential. Students receive explicit instruction, modeling and demonstration, opportunities for guided practice, and independent application of key concepts and skills in all subject areas.

Assessment
BCSD provides students with opportunities to demonstrate their understanding of content, concepts, and skills through a variety of formal and informal assessments. These include nationally-normed literacy and math assessments, and annual state assessments, depending on the grade and subject area. Additionally, teachers use other measures to assess students’ skills and knowledge and to inform instruction. These include diagnostic assessments, observations, student work samples, and teacher-created tests or quizzes. We also strive to provide students with other opportunities to demonstrate their learning beyond traditional assessments through performance tasks, inquiry, and project-based assessments.

Beginning in the 2025-26 school year, all Brewster graduates will participate in a Success Project. This student-driven culminating activity uses a capstone project design to demonstrate the Brewster Profile of a Graduate Skills and the NYS Next Generation Learning Standards. These projects will be administered at each transition year within the Brewster Central School District to students in grades 2, 5, 8, and 12.

The Profile of a Graduate outlines the skills, knowledge, and qualities students develop to succeed in college, careers, and as engaged citizens. At Brewster, our graduates demonstrate Critical Thinking, Perseverance, Collaboration, Civic Responsibility, and Adaptability.
