• BCSD New York State-Approved Driver Education Program - Spring 2025

    Eligibility:

    • This program is open to students who attend Brewster Central School District only.

    • Students must be 16 years of age with a valid NY State Learner’s Permit (MV-100) by January 31, 2025

    Lecture/Driving Schedule: 

    • The student and a parent/guardian MUST attend a mandatory orientation.  The orientation is at Brewster High School, Friday, January 31, 6:00pm in the PAC. In-car driving times are confirmed and/or selected at this orientation on a first come, first serve basis in the order in which your application was received in the main office.  Please be sure to check your schedules to confirm you will be available for ALL lectures and driving days & times. 

    • Lectures will be held on Tuesdays 2:45-4:15pm at BHS, room 210. The program has an end date of May 24, 2025 (*depending on weather and school closings.) 

    • In-car times will be at Brewster High School: 

       Wednesdays 2:30-4pm 

       Wednesdays 4-5:30pm 

       Wednesdays 5:30-7pm  

       Wednesdays 7-8:30pm

       Fridays 2:30-4pm  

    •   Please circle your first two choices on your application and we will do our best to accommodate them.  Four students to a car/session.  This is assigned on a first come, first serve basis ONLY.

     Cost

    • The cost of the course is $525.00. Payment can be made by cash or check made payable to Brewster Central School District.

     Refund Policy

    • If a student cannot be accommodated because classes are filled, all monies will be returned. No refunds will be given once your car selection has been made.

    Course Information

    • The program is 32 sessions over 16 weeks – 16 class lectures and 16 in-car sessions. You must attend all 32 sessions to receive your certificate.

    • To be eligible for a Student Certificate of Completion (MV-285), a student must earn a passing designation or grade of 65 or better in both the classroom and driving instruction components of the course.

    • This program teaches the students proper techniques, laws and responsibilities pertaining to driving in New York State. The course provides 48 hours of instruction as mandated by New York State.

    • For in-car sessions, students will be in a car with an instructor from American Driving Academy and three other students.

    • Upon successful passing & full completion of the entire course, students will receive an MV-285 (Course Completion Certificate) from the district in the mail approximately 4 weeks later. This may provide a 10-15% discount on insurance through most insurance companies, and a Class D (senior) driver’s license at age 17 upon successfully passing the NY state road test & submitting their MV-285 to the Dept. of Motor Vehicles.

    Attendance

    • Attendance at all lecture classes and in-car sessions is MANDATORY. All absences must be made up. Absences must be made up in the next session per NYS DMV guidelines. If a student needs to make up more than two in-car sessions, and they cannot be made up within the time of the driver ed program, an additional $25.00 make-up fee per session will be billed. More than 4 absences may be cause for the student to be dismissed from the course.  Make up road hours will be made for excused absences only (illness with doctor’s note or family emergency.)  

    • A parent or legal guardian MUST ATTEND the orientation with the student or the student will not be allowed to enroll in the program.

    • Before registering, please consider your other time commitments that might interfere with your full participation with this program (i.e., sports, vacation, after school activities, employment schedules, and academic responsibilities.) No refunds will be given after in-car assignments have been made.

     Registration(NOW OPEN)

    • Application must be completed and signed by a parent/guardian. Payment must be received in full at the time of registration.

      • The student must obtain their permit prior to Friday, January 31, 2025 or they will not be able to participate in the program.  No exceptions.

    • Enrollment is limited and will be processed on a first-come/first-serve basis.  Phone registrations will not be accepted. YOU MUST REGISTER PRIOR TO ATTENDING THE ORIENTATION.

    • Payment in the amount of $525.00 is due at the time of registration.  Checks should be made payable to Brewster Central School District.  A completed application, payment and a copy of the student’s permit or driver's license is needed at the time of registration.  Students may drop off their paperwork and payment to Mrs. Gagliardi in the high school main office.

    • Deadline to register for the Spring 2025 session is 2pm, Friday, January 24 or when the session is full.
