Student Directory Information Policy Information
The Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA), a Federal law, requires Brewster Central School District (the “District”), with certain exceptions, to obtain your written consent prior to the disclosure of personally identifiable information from your child’s education records. However, the District may disclose appropriately designated “directory information” without written consent, unless you have advised the Brewster Central School District to the contrary by completing the attached form. The primary purpose of directory information is to allow the District to include information from your child’s education records in certain school publications.
The District only permits limited directory information disclosure, meaning that the District limits disclosure of its designated directory information to specific parties, for specific purposes. Only the District is permitted to use student directory information for such limited purposes as school yearbooks, honor roll lists, graduation programs, playbills, and other similar uses, without obtaining individual consent.
Examples include:
-
- A playbill showing a student's role in a drama production
- The annual yearbook
- Honor roll or other recognition lists
- Graduation program
- Sports programs, such as wrestling, showing the weight and height of team members
BCSD may also release Directory Information to outside organizations that include, but are not limited to, companies that take school photographs or publish yearbooks.
BCSD may occasionally disclose certain directory information to the local news media (websites, newspapers, television, radio) for articles.
The District designates the following as directory information for its limited use:
- Student's name,
- Address,
- Telephone listing,
- Date and place of birth,

- Participation in officially recognized activities and sports,
