A District On The Move!

A District On The Move!

2025-2026 Convocation

It was a gorgeous morning on Bears Field, as teachers gathered in the stands for Convocation. Brewster Central School District Superintendent Dr. Michelle Gosh marked the occasion by using the country’s upcoming 250th anniversary as a reminder that strong public schools are the cornerstone of a thriving America.

“Thinking back to the radical ideas of 250 years ago—that all people are created equal, that they have certain unalienable rights, and that governments get their power from the people they govern—these concepts are not just in our foundational documents; they are the very ethos of America…Two of our founding fathers shared their thinking on how public education is the cornerstone of democracy...Regardless of income, background, pedigree, or home language, all of our kids get a shot.  All of them conceivably have the opportunity for outcomes that maintain or improve their standing in life and help them to reach their goals.

This concept has become routine for us, but think about the power of this ideal.

Brewster is a perfect microcosm of public education. We take a myriad of students with varying backgrounds, demonstrated abilities, but a whole lot of potential, and in partnership with parents, provide opportunities for success,” said Gosh.

In addition to vibrant new programming including being the first school district in the region to add pre-kindergarten, a substantial grant to start an innovative P-Tech program, flourishing Dual Language opportunities, and a unique NJROTC community, the district has been in the midst of a makeover with new turf fields, a security vestibule at the high school, a new intermediate school cafetorium and STEM lab and NJROC classroom at the high school.

The district, said Gosh, “is one that is on the move.”

It was an inspired welcome for teachers and administrators to start the new school year.

In addition to the superintendent’s remarks, Board of Education President Kerry Cunningham, SEIU President Marie Sangalli, Brewster Teacher’s Association President Paul George, and AAB President and BHS Principal Nikki Horler all welcomed teachers and highlighted the importance of the work of each member of the Brewster Central School District in the lives of its students.

“You are the heartbeat of our district,” said Cunningham. “Thank you for lifting students up when they struggle, thank you for being there and reminding them every day that they matter. Your work changes lives. I hope this year is a great one.”
