College Visits for 7th Graders

College Visits for 7th Graders

Trips Made Possible By Victoria Lowry Grant

On March 6th and March 13th, the 7th grade class at Henry H. Wells Middle School visited Westchester Community College as part of a comprehensive effort to introduce students to post-secondary opportunities. This experience was made possible through the generous support of the Victoria Lowry Grant.

Westchester Community College is an ideal partner in this work, particularly due to its collaboration with Brewster High School through the P-TECH program. This program offers selected students the opportunity to earn an associate degree with a concentration in cybersecurity, along with foundational coursework in mechanical and electrical technology—all at no cost.

During the visit, students toured the campus and experienced an active college environment. They explored facilities including the library, gymnasium, laboratories, lecture halls, and the student union. Students also had the opportunity to speak with faculty about academic programs in cybersecurity, health sciences, and other fields.

Many of our students will be the first in their families to attend college. The challenges they face can feel significant and are often shaped by uncertainty. Our mission is to help illuminate the path to higher education and make that journey more accessible.

This visit is part of an ongoing effort to build college awareness. As 5th graders, this group visited Manhattanville College, and they are scheduled to visit Mercy University next year. These experiences encourage students to reflect on their interests and begin thinking about what they want from a college experience.

Prior to the trip, students completed the John Holland Career Assessment Inventory to better understand their strengths, interests, and abilities. They also explored a variety of colleges and universities online. We hope these experiences help students connect their skills to future pathways and imagine new possibilities for their futures.

On a final note the lunch was awesome!

Thank you to the guidance department for supervising these important trips for students!
