Teacher Spotlight: Lawrence Maggiotto

Lawrence Maggiotto has been a standout math teacher at Brewster High School for 23 years and a true pillar of the Brewster community. He teaches Advanced Algebra 2, AP Calculus AB, and AP Calculus BC. A proud BHS alumnus himself, Mr. Maggiotto graduated in 1997 and has dedicated his career to giving back to the school that shaped him. We are excited to feature our interview with Mr. Maggiotto as our first spotlighted teacher and give our community the chance to get to know him better.

Q: What kind of student were you in high school?

A: I think I was a pretty good student academically, but more on the quiet side personality wise.

Q: Why did you become a teacher?

A: In a sense, teaching found me. I was a teaching assistant for a Macroeconomic Theory course in college, which was the first signal that directed me to the field of education.  After college, I continued to tutor students in high school mathematics, which ultimately helped to lead me into the career of high school mathematics education.

Q: What's one thing your students might be surprised to learn about you?

A: My favorite genre of music is actually melodic power metal. In general, my students typically think I listen to jazz or classical. I don’t have anything against jazz or classical, but the only time classical music was ever played was in college when I studied for my tests.

Q: Is there someplace you'd like to travel to?

A:I love traveling and still have many places to visit both within the country as well as abroad.   At some point, I hope to expand my travels to Australia and complete a cross-country road trip to visit the various regions of the US.

Q: Has a student ever taught you anything?

A:I often learn from my students, especially when it comes to technology and new lingo in the classroom. My academic strength is mathematics, but my students' strengths encompass all different areas, so it is always great to learn new things.

Q: Best piece of advice ever given?

A:I have heard so much great advice through the years, but one that certainly resonates is "invest early and often." This simple statement is not just for financial purposes, but for yourself as well. Invest in yourself through learning, experiences, or anything else that will better your life.
