Generous Grant In Honor of BCSD Unsung Hero

Brewster Central School District has received a generous grant from the Little John Foundation intended to transform the lives of students by building a center for lifelong learning and career success.  On Wednesday, June 18th, there was a ribbon-cutting ceremony at the Victoria Lowry Dream Big Center at Brewster High School.

Under the grant, students will be empowered by literacy promotion with book vending machines at JFK Elementary and C.V. Starr Intermediate; dynamic college and career exploration with college experience trips for all students starting in fifth grade to learn more about opportunities after high school; and the Victoria Lowry Dream Big Center in the guidance office at Brewster High School intended to be a hub for learning and self- discovery.

“Brewster is thrilled to receive this incredibly generous grant,” said Superintendent Dr. Michelle Gosh, “As a result of this gift, students will be able to travel to various colleges, universities, and trade school campuses, better informing their post-secondary decision-making.  This will be a game-changer for so many of our students.  In addition, the gift will allow for book vending machines that will generate excitement for reading. If we needed more evidence of what makes Brewster so special, we have it right here.”

The donation was given to the district by the family of Victoria Lowry, one of the unsung heroes of BCSD, who worked in the College and Career Room at BHS in the 1990s and provided support and guidance to countless students. Lowry inspired students to dream big, gave them a mindset of achievement, and left a legacy of care and compassion.

“As our family has spent over 40 years in the Brewster community, we know what type of character comes out of these neighborhoods. The Victoria Lowry Dream Big Award is our way to create a longstanding opportunity for each generation of students. Our mother, Victoria Lowry, worked right here in the College and Career  Room of Brewster High School. She provided so many students with the realization of their potential. We'd like to materialize that tradition in honor of her.” -John D Lowry, Little John Foundation.
