Wells Brings Back the Geography Bee

Wells Brings Back the Geography Bee

Contest Teaches Global Awareness

Wells has brought back the Geography Bee! For many years, National Geographic ran a national competition which ended in 2020.  At Wells that competition was run by social studies teacher Michael Bellucci (Sr). This year social studies teachers Michael Bellucci (Jr) and John Greggorio decided to bring back the competition for sixth graders. Each social studies class studied and prepared and held their own competitions. The winners of those class competitions got to go to the Wells auditorium today to compete in the Geography Bee. Matthew Schnitzler was the host. There were 7 rounds and each student got a different question.

The winner was Liam Chacon in the tie breaker round.  Full list of contestants: Liam Chacon, Mckenna Frost, Abigail Jones, Matthew Lescano, Yaquelin Posadas, Stephanie Romero, Marcus T. Santiago, Nina Waters.

After 7 rounds, it ended in a tie breaker. Liam won knowing the answer to the following question:

Q: In this city, the restaurant Brennan’s created a dish of bananas served in butter and brown sugar now known as Bananas Foster. Beignets [ben-YAYZ], fried dough pastries covered with sugar, were popularized by this city’s Cafe du Monde. Popular dishes in this city include muffuletta sandwiches, po’ boys, and gumbo. This city’s French Quarter contains Bourbon Street. For the point, name this most populous city in Louisiana.

A: New Orleans

Thank you to the social studies teachers for bringing back the Geography Bee. Learning about geography builds global awareness and helps students better understand how the world is connected.
