Wells Middle School Named Middle School to Watch

Wells Middle School Named Middle School to Watch

Stands Among the Most Successful Middle Schools in the State!

Wells Middle School has been named a Middle School to Watch by the State Education Department and National Forum for Schools to Watch.

The designation recognizes the school for its continuous improvement and excellence in academics, developmental responsiveness, social equity, and organizational structure.

Wells received the designation after a rigorous three-year evaluation. Of 4,300 middle schools in New York State, only 42 have received this distinction.

“Earning the designation is no small feat,” said David  Vroman, Co-Director of NYS Essential Elements: Schools to Watch. “The application process demands that schools take an honest, in-depth look at their practices. Driven by a dedicated administration and supported by a forward-thinking staff, H.H. Wells now stands alongside some of the most successful middle schools in the state and the nation. From the programs they offer, to the implementation of best practices in the classroom, to the robust support systems in place, H.H. Wells is clearly committed to doing what’s best for their students. That is what makes a School to Watch!”

“Middle school is an intense developmental time,” said Superintendent Michelle Gosh, “A great middle school allows for students' journey to be one of academic and intrapersonal growth and exploration.  This designation is further affirmation that our educational philosophy and approaches are on the right track.  Congratulations to the WMS educators and administrators for this award, and for the essential work that they do every day.”

What does this all mean for Wells?

The program is designed to promote and guide school improvement and highlight characteristics of high-performing middle schools. Wells will join a consortium of middle schools that visit one another and learn from each other. Spearheaded by a retired middle-level principal, the program brings in experts to provide professional evaluations and programming similar to the Tri-States consortium.

"This distinction showcases the different ways in which we are able to support our middle learners through a unique time in their lives. There is a quick developmental change that middle schoolers go through, and this process allows us to look at what we are doing, receive feedback on where we need to improve, and open the conversation with other middle schools around how they support their students. This designation will expand the possibilities for Wells through collaboration with other middle schools in NYS," said Carlos Rodriguez, WMS Principal.

“Given all the different types of learners we have at Wells,” said Alicia Manguso, WMS Vice Principal, “We felt that this program could demonstrate how our staff works tirelessly to meet the needs of our students.”

Wells will proudly hang a banner celebrating its state and national distinction.
