New Teacher Orientation
School starts early for teachers.
While Brewster Central School District students enjoy the last days of summer, 28 new teachers have been taking classes at "New Employee Orientation" to prepare. Last week, Brewster's new teachers gathered at Brewster High School in the library, learned who’s who and trained in the district’s technology. They also toured the area by bus. Most important, they were assigned a mentor, or more senior teacher, to guide them as they set out.
The backgrounds of the teachers vary; they come from different districts and have different levels of experience. But one thing they have in common is that–they are all excited to teach in Brewster schools.
Two of the new teachers are Cynthia Corona and Daniel Milici. Cynthia Corona will be a teacher in the Dual Language Program for fourth and fifth graders at C.V. Starr Intermediate School. She comes to Brewster from Queens, New York where she taught for two years. She said she wants to see her students succeed and grow as bilingual learners in an environment that motivates them.
Daniel Milici will be teaching Chorus and Introduction to Piano at Wells Middle School. He comes from Albany, New York where he taught for the past seven years. Daniel became a music teacher because of his passion for music performance and a desire to share that musicianship with others. He was also inspired by a great teacher in his own youth.
An experience he hopes to share with his own students. " I had many great teachers throughout my years as a student, but there is one that truly stands out in leaving the most positive and inspiring impression on me," he explained. "That was my middle school band teacher, Mr. Seymour. He found out early on that I was a piano player and that I really enjoyed music. He had such a warm and humorous personality that could always put you in a good mood. I can vividly remember looking forward to last period band class, sitting with my friends in the low brass section, and best of all, getting ready to make music together. Each day, I try in my own way to replicate his style so that my students can enjoy the positive experience in music class that I had.”
