32 BHS Students Awarded NY State Seal of Biliteracy
Thirty-two students at Brewster High School have received the New York State Seal of Biliteracy. The award recognizes students who have studied and attained proficiency in two or more languages by high school graduation.
Students must have completed all English-language arts requirements for graduation with an overall grade point average of 2.0 or above in those classes. Students must also demonstrate proficiency in one or more languages other than English.
“There are so many benefits to being bilingual in an increasingly globalized world. Being bilingual is good for college, it’s also great for employment and will give you insights into other cultures. It will open up so many opportunities, “ said Principal Horler.
Some of the students who received the seal speak a foreign language at home and some learned a second language at school, one student, who is trilingual, received a seal for two languages.
“I heard about the seal in eighth grade,” said Charlie Armon, who received the seal in both French and Spanish, “I love learning languages.”
Sintia Cardona, who received her seal in Spanish, plans to work in the medical field. “It is so important to be able to explain things in two languages. I feel like I can really help people,” she said.
“I have been taking Italian since seventh grade,” said Victoria Kovaleski, “I emailed my first Italian teacher, Ms. Velasquez, to tell her. She was so happy for me.”
