On Sunday, April 24th, nearly 80 members of Brewster High School’s Math Honor Society, Mu Alpha Theta, gathered at the high school cafeteria or gym to welcome dozens of third-graders from CV Starr and raise money for St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital. The third-graders were invited to attend a charitable event for a fun-filled half-day of math activities and games, which were run by the Honor Society members.

“Last year, the club worked to run our Math-A-Thon virtually so that it could run during COVID, but it was important to the club that this year we embrace the in-person experience,” said one of the club advisors, Matthew Tarby. “It was a great opportunity for all students involved to develop their return to normalcy.”

During the event, third-grade students engaged in math-themed activities under the guidance of their high school peers. They developed their math skills through workbook activities, played math games like Skittles Bar Graph, used pipe cleaners to build three-dimensional shapes and even played a math-related Scavenger Hunt game! The younger students also had the opportunity to see the Math-A-Thon superheroes, Fraction, Minus, Octagon, and Symmetry.

In the weeks leading up to the Math-A-Thon, third graders reached out to friends and family for sponsorship, collecting donations to St. Jude’s. This year, the Math-A-Thon raised nearly $3,901 during the event.
