It was a historic night at Henry H. Wells Middle School on June 4th, 2024. The first class of P-tech or Brewster Opportunity students–51 in total–gathered for a pinning ceremony to kick off their journey. Administrators, counselors, board members, industry partners, friends and family were all present to celebrate the start of the new program, which is the first of its kind in Putnam County. The program is funded by a $2.5 million grant from the state Education Department.
Through the program, students will be eligible to earn both a high school diploma and two-year postsecondary degree at Westchester Community College in Cybersecurity, Electrical Technology, or Mechanical Technology, which will lead to an Associates of Applied Science (A.A.S) at no cost to the student. During their time at Brewster High School, students will participate in a range of workplace experiences including mentorship, worksite visits and internships. Upon graduation from Brewster High School, students will continue these experiences on the campus of WCC.
Miguel A. Suarez, coordinator of the P-Tech program, said, “This team of students will receive hands-on skills that will be an asset to many companies and colleges. The tech field is wide open and waiting for you. We are proud of you and the path you have chosen. You will do great things.”
The excitement was real for both students and parents.
“My son signed up for p-tech to give himself options,” explained Vanessa Monge.
“It’s a great plan to get ready for a career,” said student Colt Saraceno.
“It’s amazing to find out about career opportunities in the tech field at such an early age,” said parent, Victor Isaza.
Danielle Isaza added, “I also like that the students all know each other and will go through the experience together. They will be able to rely on each other and get support, which will build confidence.”
The price point was meaningful to even the students who are rising eighth graders.
“We will get two free years of community college,” explained William Lakaj.
Marcus Castro was thinking beyond graduation, “I think this program will give me a good opportunity to be successful in life and to help me in my community, which is important to me.”
