Student of Distinction Gabriel Castro
As a student in the Construction Electricity program at the PNW BOCES Career and Technical Education (CTE) Center, Gabriel Castro understands the challenges associated with learning new skills.
“It’s not easy,” said Castro, a senior at Brewster High School. “We obviously all struggle at times, so being able to help each other get through those challenges is the best thing you can do.”
Castro’s willingness to assist classmates was one of many positive traits he was praised for during the Brewster Central School District’s Board of Education meeting on Nov. 19, 2024. The board honored Castro as a PNW BOCES Student of Distinction during the meeting, which was held at the district office.
“I have put in a lot of effort,” Castro said, “so this means a lot to me.”
For his achievement, Castro received a certificate and medal, which were presented by Brewster Superintendent of Schools Dr. Michelle Gosh and Board of Education President Kerry F. Cunningham. He was also joined by PNW BOCES Deputy Superintendent Dr. Lynn Allen, CTE Academy Principal Jessica Miller, and members of his family.
While Castro was recognized, Miller shared the kind words of his teacher, Larry Marino, who praised Castro for his commitment to both academic and hands-on work.
“What truly sets Gabriel apart is his character,” Marino said. “His easy-going nature and kindness create a supportive and collaborative atmosphere in the classroom. Whether helping a classmate or offering a word of encouragement, Gabriel consistently goes above and beyond to support those around him.”
Castro initially chose the Tech Center and the Construction Electricity program on the recommendation of friends. He quickly realized it offered training for career paths he could willingly pursue.
Castro said he has enjoyed learning how to troubleshoot problems and appreciates that the program blends both science and technical training.
“This opens so many doors to me,” he said. “Going into an electrical union would be amazing, or I can pursue electrical engineering. I think I’m good at science, so I like the idea of being an electrical engineer.”
