We Are Wells
“We are Wells” is a new exploratory class at H.H. Wells Middle School. It’s a class that is meant to teach all 6th graders to recognize and build on their strengths, with the goal of improving their performance in school and within the community.
Sarah Brooker, a teacher who has been in the district for 22 years, will lead the class.
“The curriculum includes activities and discussions focused on developing social, emotional, and academic skills,” said Brooker, “Students learn about social media, digital citizenship, conflict resolution, and civic responsibility, and they practice a growth mindset. The course features varied learning experiences, including introspection exercises, small group work, guest speakers, and project-based learning. The teaching methods are innovative, interactive, multimedia-rich, and student-centered.”
Today the class is working on finding the perfect employee–Be The Boss: Which resume would you choose?--they are in charge of a water slide park and are looking for candidates to work the pool and concession stand. They get into groups and discuss the candidates’ strengths and weaknesses.
“I think Hunter Pearson is the best person for the job because he is first aid certified, has lots of restaurant experience and is hard working,” said Madison Johnson.
“I think Danielle Sury would be good because he has lifeguard experience at the city pool. He seems smart,” said Ellie Paradiso.
In fact, it was unanimous–all the groups agreed on the two best candidates for the job.
“This class has been great because I’ve learned how to study better, control my emotions, and how to assert myself,” said Madison.
Although the course is only a quarter of the year, it provides lessons for a lifetime.
