JFK Reads! Kickoff Event
“We are here to find out what the mystery book is going to be,” said second grader Sofia Real.
“It’s going to be the best book ever,” said Reed Ratski.
“I wonder who the special character is going to be? The teachers told us a special character was going to be here today,” said kindergartner Trey Sondey.
JFK elementary students gathered this morning for a dramatic JFK Reads! book reveal. In its third year, JFK Reads! in which the entire school will read the same book, has become a sensation. One student couldn't get to sleep last night he was so excited about the mystery book.
“The purpose of the program,” said teacher Sara DiDio “is to foster a home-school connection, create a sense of community, and share our love for reading.”
To kick off the morning, the entire school counted down from ten. Then they guessed what the book might be: Dr. Seuss, Despicable Me 4, Christmas, Piggy & Gerald, and My Mother’s Dragon were some of the ideas. Then the drumroll for the reveal: “Juana and Lucas” by Juana Medina, a story based on author-illustrator Juana Medina’s own childhood in Colombia, about Juana and her best amigo, her dog Lucas.
Then to the delight of the pre-K through second grade crowd, Juana made an appearance. Dressed up as the main character Juana, fourth grader Brena Hamboussi, the daughter of JFK librarian Elizabeth Hamboussi walked on stage with her stuffed dog Lucas and spoke to students about her hometown Bogota, Colombia.
Every week of the month a reminder via ParentSqure is sent out to parents: “This week we are reading chapters 1-3. Parents have the option to read the book themselves or else click a link to hear each chapter read aloud in either English or Spanish.” The chapters were pre-recorded by JFK teachers, with special appearances by district personalities such as superintendent Dr. Michelle Gosh.
Throughout the month, teachers have book-related activities planned. Next week there is even a spirit week connected to the book in which students are encouraged to dress up on culture day, favorite animal day, sports attire, space theme, and of course on Friday Brewster spirit wear. A highlight this year will be the author's visit on March 21st.
“When I see the cover, I think that this book will be about a girl who teaches her dog how to read,” said one student. “I can’t wait to find out.”
What a wonderful way for students, teachers and families to get excited about reading for the month of March.
