BCSD Named Community Champion Honoree

The American Cancer Society and Relay For Life of Eastern Putnam Committee are pleased to announce that the 2025 Relay For Life Community Champion Honoree will be the faculty and staff of Brewster Central School District.

For the past eight years, the Relay For Life has been hosted at Brewster High School. In addition to lending facilities and logistical support, the dedicated faculty and staff as well as various student clubs have participated in the annual walk during which they have the opportunity to reflect, remember and raise funds for cancer research.  American Cancer Society’s Senior Development Manager, Kate Corsitto states, “In recognition of the incredible support of our annual community fundraiser and our mission since day one, we are thrilled to be able to celebrate the faculty and staff of Brewster Central School District.”

“The district is most humbly honored to be named Community Champion Honoree. There has been an outpouring of support for this important community event from all corners of the district, in addition to the galvanized efforts our teachers and support staff extend to those affected by cancer. This recognition serves as yet another example of the kindness and compassion that make Brewster Central School District such a special place to live and work.” commented Dr. Michelle Gosh, Superintendent of Schools.

In addition to this honor, this year’s Survivor Honoree will be Sue Scherer-Riner, a retired Brewster educator and cancer thriver. The Relay For Life will be held on Saturday, May 31, 2025 from 2pm-10pm on Field 1 (behind JFK Elementary School). Relay teams, Survivors, local businesses, students and community members will come together on the Brewster CSD campus to walk together in honor, memory and support of all our loved ones touched by cancer.  During the event, Survivors will be celebrated together with a complimentary meal, Caregivers will be celebrated for all the love they give us, and live music will be played. As the sun sets, bags purchased in honor, memory and support of all our loved ones touched by cancer will be illuminated and attendees will walk in quiet reflection. These efforts further amplify and fund the mission for every cancer and every life.

Relay For Life of Eastern Putnam helps to fund breakthrough cancer research, advocacy, and support services for people locally and across the nation. We have heard from local community members who are Survivors because of research ACS funded, we have people who have received free rides to treatment through our Road to Recovery program and stayed free at our Hope Lodge right in NYC during their treatments. We are proud to know that our mission is vast yet makes an impact right here in Putnam County. Relay For Life is more than just a walk, we are a community movement to end cancer as we know it, for everyone.
